Frameless Shower Door Header

When does a Frameless Shower Enclosure Header make Sense?

There is much to consider when designing a heavy glass frameless shower enclosure, and paramount for most contractors and designers is the aesthetic look of the shower enclosure. Often, they are primarily focused on trying to match the finish of existing bathroom fixtures or a certain bathroom design style. In this pursuit, functionality and structural integrity are important to keep in mind.

Frameless Shower Door Header

In most cases, with the exception of bypass sliders or barn door-style gliders, shower doors, and panels are secured to a wall or the ceiling with channel and/or clamps which provide adequate support and stability and do not require additional support for the glass. Even when a door is designed to be affixed to another glass panel, many times as long as the door and panel sizes are kept in check and adequate fasteners are used, then no header or support bar would be required for proper functionality or stability.

However, when the design calls for doors to be mounted to multiple angled panels or to a wall with a pocket door, adding a header may be the best option for proper functionality and safety. Designed to offer a sleek minimalist look, our MY Shower Door header allows for a much broader application style and variety of layouts, providing more options for door positioning and panel sizing with practicality being the main guiding principle.

When our header is used in conjunction with our matching low-visibility channel, the header enables the span of larger openings, accommodates different glass path angles, and provides greater stability to an enclosure, all while retaining a minimalist look without the need for multiple fasteners. This type of versatility is unmatched by standard industry hardware and fasteners.

In short, a header makes sense when applications and designs require doors to be located between multiple larger panels that will bear the weight of the door when it operates when angles will not accommodate specific hardware, or when structural concerns are at play.

Headers provide versatility and nearly limitless glass path options when designing a shower enclosure that will ensure a minimalist look that most contractors and designers are aiming for.

How Much Does a MY Shower Door Frameless Shower Enclosure Cost?

There are a few things to consider when researching the cost of frameless shower enclosures at MY Shower Door, including, the base price for the shower enclosure type and any additional options or enhancements.

  • What is included in the base price?

The base price of your shower enclosure will include the following:

    • 3/8″ thick, standard-clear, tempered glass.
    • All fabrication of the glass (for example holes for the handle).
    • Your choice of chrome or brushed nickel channel to secure any glass panels to the floor and/or wall.
    • Our duet-style handle.
    • Full installation and warranty provided by MY Shower Door.

    A few notes:

    • The base price will vary depending on the overall size of your shower opening.
    • At MY Shower Door, all our installers are trained professionals employed by us. They are not subcontractors.

With all the above information in mind, to give you an example of how the approximate pricing would look for a project, let’s use a somewhat standard-size shower door opening, such as a 60″ wide wall-to-wall opening (similar to a standard tub size converted to a walk-in shower) and a common shower door glass height of 79″.

For this example, the three most popular shower enclosures that we install in a 60″ wall-to-wall opening are:

    • MY Pivot Door & Panel
    • MY Slide
    • MY Glide
  • What are the additional options available?

Depending on the enclosure type you choose, there may be some additional options that would increase the overall price, including:

    • Opting to use ½″ thick glass, if the door is not a sliding door enclosure (adds $200 for typical enclosures)
    • Adding MY EZ Care Shield glass coating with a 10-year MY Shower Door provided warranty (adds $100 per panel of glass)
    • Upgrading glass type or clarity from standard-clear (Ex. MY Ultra-Clear glass, Rain glass, Satin-Etched or Frosted glass, etc.)
    • Upgrading hardware finish from standard chrome or brushed nickel to one of the following*:
      • Brass
      • Oil-Rubbed Bronze
      • Polished Nickel
      • Matte Black
      • Satin Brass
      • Vibrant Brushed-Bronze
(*Note: not all finishes are available for all handles or hardware?)
    • Opting to use glass clamps instead of channels if your enclosure includes stationary panels of glass.
    • Choosing a header-less design (In cases where the door is not hinged against a wall, additional glass-to-glass hardware may be required.)
    • Handle or towel bar additions or upgrading from the standard duet-style handle.
    • Glass height above the typical 79″.

The starting base prices for these enclosure types can range from $1,200 to $1,900, depending on which type of enclosure you choose.

My Pivot hinge

MY Pivot Door and Panel

This is a popular shower enclosure option for bathrooms that do not have any obstructions near the shower entrance (for example: toilet, vanity, etc.) that would impede the pivot door opening path. Our MY Pivot Door and Panel provides a modern, open look with no metal header across the top of the glass. Our MY Pivot Door swings both inward and outward for your convenience.

The additional options available with our MY Pivot Door and Panel enclosure are:

  • ½″ thick glass option (adds $200)
  • MY EZ Care Shield glass coating with a 10-year warranty (adds $100 per panel of glass)
  • Glass type or clarity change from standard clear (MY Ultra Clear glass, Rain glass, Satin Etched or Frosted glass, etc.)
  • Hardware finish change from chrome or brushed nickel (not all finishes are available for all handles)
    • Brass
    • Oil Rubbed Bronze
    • Polished Nickel
    • Matte Black
    • Satin Brass
    • Vibrant Brushed Bronze
  • Glass clamps instead of channels for securing the stationary panel of glass
  • Header-less design (in cases where the door is not hinged against a wall, additional glass-to-glass hardware may be required to eliminate a header)
  • Handle/towel bar changes
  • Glass height above 79″

My Slide

MY Slide

This is a more traditional shower enclosure with two 3/8″-thick, bypass-sliding glass doors each with a towel bar. Our MY Slide has a track at the bottom with no grooves allowing for easier cleaning and long-term maintenance. Our MY Slide header is made of heavy gauge aluminum to support the weight of the glass doors. We designed our MY Slide hardware with a trough underneath to conceal all silicone for a sleek, clean look.

The additional options available with our MY Slide enclosure are:

  • MY EZ Care Shield glass coating with a 10-year warranty (adds $100 per panel of glass)
  • Glass type or clarity upgrade from standard clear (MY Ultra Clear glass, Rain glass, Satin Etched or Frosted glass, etc.)
  • Hardware finish upgrade (other than chrome or brushed nickel)
  • Handle/towel bar upgrade

Shower Door Film

The Fusion of Glass & Window Film

The window film industry offers solar, security, decorative, and privacy solutions in 2023. It’s a world in which MY Shower Door is fully immersed.

For the past 12 years, MY Shower Door has partnered our nine showrooms across Florida with several window film installation companies to provide solar, security, and decorative solutions to homeowners.

As an alternative to sandblasting the glass in your home, which is expensive and permanent, MY Shower Door offers the option of custom window film for privacy or aesthetics.

To learn more about what founder and CEO, Bill Daubmann, had to say, read this article entitled, “Joining Forces and Leveling Up: The Fusion of Glass and Window Film”, written by Chris Collier in the April 2023 issue of US Glass Metal & Glazing.

MSD Lead Time

How long does it take to get a new frameless shower enclosure from MY Shower Door?

One of the first questions we are often asked by potential customers pertains to turnaround time. They want to know how long it will take to get a new shower enclosure installed when working with MY Shower Door. As you can imagine, there are many factors that can affect this timeline. Our goal for this post is to help you better understand some of these factors and what MY Shower Door does differently that allows you and other potential customers to have your shower enclosure installed faster than the industry standard.

Obtaining Project Specifications Quickly

One factor that can greatly affect the timeline of installing your new frameless shower enclosure from MY Shower Door is the ability for us to quickly obtain your project specifications. Before your enclosure can be ordered, we must obtain exact measurements of your shower opening, in addition to finalizing your enclosure design and hardware selections.

For this purpose, we at MY Shower Door schedule an in-home measuring appointment with ALL our customers. These appointments typically occur within a few days of you contacting us, or in some cases, on the same day. During this appointment, our team will carefully measure your shower opening, taking special note of any out-of-square walls, out-of-level surfaces, etc. Ensuring that we have exact measurements is the key to a perfect fit for your new frameless shower enclosure.

Furthermore, to expedite the process, during the in-home measuring appointment, our team will also assist you in finalizing the enclosure design as well as the hardware selections for your project, such as handle style and hardware finish. Once the measurements are obtained and your selections are finalized, our team will then have everything they need to proceed with your order.

Prompt Scheduling of the Installation Date

Another factor that can affect your project timeline is scheduling the installation date for your shower enclosure. As a last step before leaving the in-home measuring appointment, our team will schedule with you the exact installation date for your shower enclosure. We take pride in being able to provide our customers with an exact installation date at the time of the in-home measuring appointment. Although the actual time between the in-home measuring visit and the installation date may differ slightly based on your location, at MY Shower Door we strive for a 2-week timeline on average, whereas industry standards can range anywhere from 4 weeks up to 12 weeks.

The Goal: Get Your Glass Faster

An additional factor that can affect your project timeline is the sourcing of the glass and hardware. Many providers of glass products source their glass from overseas, which, due to supply chain issues, can often result in dramatically increased lead times for your project. However, at MY Shower Door, our glass is manufactured by our sister company, D3 Glass, located in Fort Myers, Florida. Therefore, we can procure your glass much quicker than those companies that do not source their glass locally. Moreover, the hardware used by MY Shower Door is proprietary and is also stocked locally. This allows our showroom teams to work directly with the D3 Glass manufacturing team to jumpstart the ordering process for your shower enclosure. Additionally, our teams are able to maintain the high level of glass quality that we are known for, allowing us to consistently exceed our customers’ expectations.

The Difference: We’re Specialists

The last factor that can affect the timeline of your project is the experience of the installers. At MY Shower Door, we do things differently than other glass shops. For one, as our name suggests, we focus all our efforts on shower doors, specifically, frameless shower doors. This means that instead of installing glass for various projects, we only focus on installing glass for shower enclosures. Because of this focus, we are experts in the shower door industry. In fact, all our installers are specifically trained to install MY Shower Door enclosures. We have an extensive installation training department where our team is constantly improving their skills. Our goal is to be as efficient and thorough as possible when we are in your home. Rest assured that whoever installs your new shower enclosure from MY Shower Door has the knowledge and experience to ensure that it is safe and beautiful.

Exceptional Customer Care

As your scheduled installation date approaches, a member of our customer care team will contact you by phone to remind you of your installation date as well as answer any questions or concerns that you may have.

Final Thoughts

Our overall company goal is to install your new shower enclosure within 2 weeks of order. Depending on your location, the turnaround may differ slightly.
Thank you for taking the time to read this article. We hope this post has provided you with some valuable insights into our process at MY Shower Door as we continually strive to exceed your expectations.

Installation Appointment

What To Expect at a MY Shower Door Installation Appointment

What to Expect at a MY Shower Door
Installation Appointment

This article will cover what you can expect when one of our MY Shower Door teams visits your home for the installation of your MY Shower Door frameless shower enclosure. We understand that welcoming someone into your home without knowing what to expect can be stressful. We hope that the information provided here will serve to alleviate the uncertainty of that visit, thereby giving you peace of mind.

Upon Arrival

First, please note that all our installation teams will be driving a MY Shower Door vehicle and will be dressed professionally in MSD attire, so you know for certain that it is “us” and not some other company when we arrive.

We will arrive at your home within the arrival window provided to you at your time of purchase. If a direct contact number has been provided, then you will receive a courtesy call or text from a team member approximately 15-30 minutes ahead of our expected arrival time.

Initial Prep

Once we arrive, we will introduce ourselves and bring our tools into the bathroom(s) where the installation is to be performed. We will then prepare the bathroom area by laying out padded blankets to protect the floor of the shower and to provide an adequate spot for staging your glass.

We are trained professionals and, as such, care deeply about being as efficient as possible and respecting your time and property.

At this point, we will inform you of the approximate duration of the installation. Some things for you to know:

  • Please advise us upon arrival if you have any pets/small children that we need to be aware of.
  • You may wish to move items out of the way in the bathroom before we arrive.
  • We may need alternate paths to the bathroom for glass carrying.
  • We will require access to electrical outlets to cut hardware outside.

Noise & Workflow

Before and during the installation, you may hear moderate to loud noises associated with the use of power tools or grinders. Additionally, multiple trips in and out of the house may be necessary as we move materials and tools to and from the project area(s).

Although these conditions are typical, the noises and movements may startle small children or pets. You can be confident that our team will be aware of such circumstances and will work with you to provide a positive experience during the entire installation process of your new shower enclosure.

Finishing Up

Once we have completed the installation, we will notify you that we are finished and invite you into the bathroom to inspect the installation.

During this time, we will review all warranties associated with the enclosure, review with you the proper care and maintenance techniques of the glass and hardware and provide you with printed materials detailing all pertinent information, for your convenience.

Lastly, we will provide you with options for payment of your balance, as well as a link to rate your entire MY Shower Door experience.

Final Thoughts

Thank you for taking the time to read this article on what you can expect at a MY Shower Door installation appointment. We appreciate the opportunity to be your frameless shower door provider and look forward to ensuring that your expectations are exceeded!

8-tips-shower-remodel

8 Shower Remodeling Design Tips

If you are thinking of remodeling your shower or are already in the renovation process, here are some design tips to consider that can save you some frustration down the road. Feel free to reach out to your local MY Shower Door team if you have any additional questions on this topic.

broken glass

#1 – Avoid using glass tile if you plan to install a glass enclosure.

The drilling necessary during the installation process of a glass enclosure will inevitably result in cracking of glass tile.

Odd Angles

#2 – Avoid creating odd glass path angles.

We recommend that you do not design the glass path for a future shower enclosure at an odd angle where glass panel or shower door will meet the wall. Odd angles at the walls may result in “Hinge Bind” making it impossible for the door to operate effectively.

deco notch

#3 – Avoid using raised or decorative tiles on the wall sections where an eventual shower enclosure will be located.

A frameless shower door design requires tight tolerances to the wall to ensure a water-tight fit. Flush wall surfaces along the glass path will allow for better door functionality and eliminate unsightly gaps.

Bench Notch

#4 – Beware of unnecessary half wall or bench overhangs.

Overhangs will require some sort of notching (either in the glass or the overhang) for the tightest gap result. By avoiding unnecessary overhangs, you will eliminate unsightly gaps and fillers and reduce the potential for water leakage.

Design Obstruction

#5 – Beware of designing obstructions in the eventual glass door path.

Frameless shower doors have the ability to open in and out. Thus, ensuring there are no obstructions like towel bars in the door pathway will allow for proper door operation.

pitch curb

#6 – Ensure benches and thresholds (curbs) are properly pitched.

Benches and thresholds must be pitched inward to shed water properly. It is recommended to use a one-piece slab for benches and thresholds for this reason.

water spray

#7 – Avoid positioning body sprays opposite an eventual enclosure door.

Always position body sprays so they are directed toward interior shower walls to avoid potential water leakage.

shower controls

#8 – Consider the location of your shower controls.

If your toilet is on the same wall as your showerhead and controls, you should consider relocating the controls to another wall to make it easier to access them without walking into the shower.
